Why do some profiles attract our attention more than others on Instagram?
Earlier this week I was scrolling through my feed during a break and noticed how often I stop to look at certain profiles while completely ignoring others. It isn't always because someone is famous or posting amazing content. Sometimes a single photo, an interesting comment, or a shared hobby is enough to make a profile stand out. Later, while organizing my account, I came across recentlyfollowed and started thinking about how many small decisions we make online without even realizing it. The people we choose to follow often reflect our current interests, moods, or even random moments of curiosity. A month later, those reasons can be almost impossible to remember. It made me curious whether other people also notice patterns in who they decide to follow and what originally attracted them to those profiles.
Funny thing is that I wasn’t even looking for anything specific when I noticed how different my Instagram activity looked compared to the week before, a few familiar accounts had shifted around, new ones appeared, and it made me curious enough to spend a little time figuring out what had changed, while browsing recentlyfollowed, I started spotting patterns that I normally would have ignored during casual scrolling, what seemed like a random observation at first turned into a surprisingly useful way to understand how quickly online interactions and interests can evolve from one day to the next.
